California Redemption Value Press Release

Hella Fresh Theater Presents California Redemption Value, a new play by John Rosenberg.

Suicide, HIV, murder. In California, saying it is as good as doing it.

A drama teacher, her banished students and rebellious offspring fight to stay afloat on a one-bedroom apartment in Hollywood, California. Tempest-tossed by divorce and family rejection, the five ultimately square-off in the living room performing acts of suicide andmurder as desperate attempts for validation. A deeply personal testament to the author's formative years, California Redemption Value offers a comedic celebration of the redemptive power of lying.

California Redemption Value is premiering at the Papermill Arts Collective, the new community space in Kensington. Located a few blocks from Front Street and Lehigh Avenue, the Papermill Arts Collective is a five-story warehouse featuring artist workspace, an art gallery, community library and 50 seat theater. Hella Fresh Theater is proud to be the resident company at the Papermill Theater and is dedicated to providing low-cost space for artists to work and display their craft.
John Rosenberg, the writer and director of California Redemption Value, is a recent transplant from San Francisco. Rosenberg describes the work of his theater company as “champagne taste on a beer budget, which should feel right at home in Kensington.” Hella Fresh Theater’s previous production of Cheap Guy HOF, Class of 2010, part of the 2010 Fringe Festival was well received by longtime Philadelphia Inquirer critic Howard Shapiro whopremonitorily noted the one-act version of California Redemption Value as “ha[ving] good possibilities and could be enlarged to a fuller piece.” Rosenberg's Jericho Road Improvement Association, was chosen as a top pick of the year by the SF Bay Guardian and The SF Weekly stated that Mr. Rosenberg “tapped solidly into the vein of youthful and gripping theater” in the production of his first staged play, Use Both Hands.
California Redemption Value runs January 15th through February 6th, 2pm on Saturday and Sundays. Tickets are $10. The Papermill Theater is located at 2825 Ormes Street.
